We often hear from many of our Hummelstown area customers who have had a lower leg injury or are recovering from a surgery how painful crutches can be as well as how limiting a knee scooter may be when trying to be mobile without bearing weight on the affected foot or ankle. Keystone Mobility offers a very innovative alternative to these products called the iWalk 2.0 which has had great results for many of our customers.
The iWalk 2.0 is the latest and greatest product on the market of rehabilitation devices. For patients who have sustained a lower leg injury in an accident or following surgery, the iWalk 2.0 is the best device to use during recovery. It attaches directly around a patient’s thigh, elevates the injured lower leg, and provides a temporary lower leg for the patient to walk on. Compared to alternative rehabilitation devices, the iWalk 2.0 has many advantages, including causing less pain, speeding up the recovery process, and allowing patients more independence and mobility during their rehabilitation.
The iWalk can be recommended to almost every patient. Patients who are eligible to use iWalk as an alternative to crutches or knee scooters must have had the ability to walk on most terrains unassisted with average balance and no limp before sustaining their leg injury and must only have only a below-knee injury to one leg. They also need to fit certain height and weight requirements; users must stand between four feet, ten inches and six feet, six inches and weigh no more than two hundred seventy-five pounds.
Although most people who sustain leg injuries which require the use of crutches or a knee scooter are eventually rehabilitated and are able to walk normally again, the rehab process can be difficult. Because patients are unable to use the muscles in their injured leg while using standard underarm crutches, forearm crutches, or a knee scooter, the rehabilitation process can take much longer even for a minor injury due to muscle atrophy that develops quickly during recovery. With the iWalk 2.0, however, patients can walk on their own with the help of the device, allowing them to exercise their leg muscles and significantly reducing muscle atrophy, thereby shortening the recovery process. Furthermore, because patients have such limited mobility and independence on crutches and walkers, they are likely to not use them and attempt to walk on their injured leg to accomplish certain everyday tasks that these devices do not allow. With the iWalk 2.0, there is no need for patients to be non-compliant as they can do almost everything they normally can while using the iWalk.
The iWalk 2.0 allows patients to maintain a level of independence and functionality that alternative forms of rehabilitation devices do not support. Because the iWalk is akin to a temporary lower leg, it does not require patients to support themselves using their hands or arms, as crutches do. With the iWalk 2.0, patients can open doors for themselves, climb stairs using the hand rail without fear of falling, push a shopping cart at the grocery store, carry bags and other items without assistance, cook, walk a pet, use public transportation, and more. The iWalk 2.0 can also fit neatly in smaller spaces, unlike larger, more bulky alternative rehabilitation devices such as knee scooters, allowing patients to easily maneuver around small kitchens and other tight rooms.
Pain is an unavoidable part of crutches, which are the most popular rehabilitation device. They are difficult to use, dangerous to navigate, and they cause constant pain and muscle fatigue in the underarms, upper leg, arms, and shoulders. Because it is hands-free and does not involve any other part of the body except the injured leg, the iWalk 2.0 should not cause users any pain.
