Accessing a bathroom can be extremely difficult and dangerous for those with disabilities. A typical bathroom is tiled, has counters, a porcelain toilet and a bathtub/shower. On top of that, throw in a wet and humid environment and you potentially have an accident waiting to happen for the person needing to access the bathroom or the care giver who is assisting. Let’s face it, no two bathrooms are alike and you can always count on obstacles in this small environment that you must navigate to get to the sink, toilet, tub or shower.
Accessing a bathroom for someone who is dependent on a wheelchair is often one of the more difficult tasks in the home and many of us take it for granted. Because most bathroom are small, often times someone cannot even access the bathroom through a standard doorway with their everyday wheelchair. Many times people have to consider the option of modifying their bathroom to make it more accessible. However, did you know that there are literally hundreds of very unique products on the market that can help someone become more independent in their bathroom environment?
Here are some examples of unique bath safety products that we really like:
1. Maddak Sliding Transfer Bench
The Maddak sliding transfer bench is a cost effective solution that has a simple sliding mechanism that slides from outside of the tub, over the edge and into the tub. This is a great solution for those who can access the bathroom but just need that minimal support and safe access into the tub in the seated position.
2. Shower Buddy
The Shower Buddy is a great solution for walk in showers that have the traditional lip that most showers have that are obstacles for any shower chair on wheels. The Shower Buddy can act as a bedside commode, a roll over toilet chair as well ability to take advantage of the sliding system that slides the seat over the shower lip into the shower. Once in the shower the system can swivel allowing a caregiver to turn the person within the shower.

3. Tub Buddy
The Tub Buddy also provides various options as a toilet/bath chair similar to the Shower Buddy except it was designed for the bath tub. The track system slides over the top of most standard tubs allowing people to access the tub and use as a shower without needing to do wheelchair to bathtub transfers in the bathroom. The Tub Buddy also provides a great positioning solution allowing individuals to be comfortably positioned depending on their condition. For additional positioning, the Tub Buddy also has the ability to tilt.

4. Columbia Medical
Columbia Medical provides several options that can make bath time a more safe activity. They have great solutions for children who have various support needs. Their Elite bath/shower chair is a simple design with moderate support that works much like a high end lawn chair. With many adjustments for height, angle, trunk and leg support, this simple product can be great for very small children who can be carried into the bathroom or lifted onto the chair that sits in the bath tub. As a child grows and their weight increases and there becomes a need to roll them into the bathroom in the chair. The Elite offers the ability to attach to a sliding transfer system. As with other sliding transfer systems, the individual can be transferred into the chair in another room and rolled into the bathroom.
Columbia also offers a higher end product in the Omni that also has the ability to have a toilet seat that can be used for toileting as well.
